Mirjana Mirić, Valentina Sokolovska and Annemarie Sorescu-Marinković, members of the VLingS project, recently published a paper titled “Mother tongue in Serbia: A speakers’ perspective on the meaning of the concept” in the “Open Linguistics” journal. The term “mother tongue” is commonly used in censuses, education contexts, and sociolinguistic research. It is a familiar concept that is often intuitively understood, but challenging to define precisely. The study sheds light on what the speakers of vulnerable languages in Serbia mean when they talk about “mother tongue”, and shows that the term is more heterogeneous than generally assumed. The paper is open access and can be downloaded at the following link: https://www.degruyter.com/…/10.1515/opli-2024-0016/html
