Vulnerable Languages and Linguistic Varieties in Serbia

The Annual Conference on Romani Studies

In 2022, the Conference on Romani Studies organized by the Gypsy Lore Society, the biggest annual scholarly event devoted to Romani Studies worldwide, took place in Belgrade, from September 28th to 30th, at the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts. The co-organizer was the Board for the Study of Life and Customs of the Roma at the Serbian Academy of Sciences. The conference gathered almost one hundred scholars from various disciplines, devoted to the study of different aspects of Romani studies. Romani is one of the vulnerable languages in Serbia, also encompassed by our project. Within the framework of the conference, Svetlana Ćirković and Mirjana Mirić delivered the lecture “Word order in the noun phrase in Gurbet Romani in Eastern Serbia: a corpus-based study”, while Annemarie Sorescu-Marinković presented “The Linguistic Landscape of Banat Cemeteries: Deciphering Bayash Migration”.
